Anybody Know About Binoculars?
I've recently been reading some astronomy guides and they say if you are just starting out, rather than jump in and buy a telescope, that you should start off with a cheap pair of binoculars, around the 50mm lens mark.
I have found some binoculars on ebay for cheap, they are called "Mystery" binoculars.
The specs are as follows -
» Multi-coated optics for superior light transmission
» Reliable, fog-free performance
» Non-slip rubber armor absorbs shock while providing a firm grip
» Large center focus knob for easy, precise adjustments
» Longer eye relief
» Ideal for water sports, out door activities, bird watching, walking, climbing, travel
» Supplied boxed with carry case, lenscloth & neckstrap
» Dimensions (approx):L = 135mm W = 75mm H = 50mm
» Magnification :65x
» Ocular Lens Aperture :15mm
» Objective Lens Aperture :42mm
» Weight :330 G
» Focus System: Center
» Field 12° 399/5000M
Does anybody know of this brand? Are they worth using just to start out? Do the specs sound good?
Im a true beginner in this and just want something to check out the stars and the moon, before i jump in and buy a scope.
Thanks in advance.

I would look through them first if at all possible. However if these are them I would not get them. I would avoid anything with orange or ruby coatings as they will only cut down on the light. And another rule of thumb to avoid is anything advertised by magnification. I believe these are advertised as 65X which is totally useless in anything hand held.

I don’t know how much $$ you want to spend but these are the best binoculars you will get for under 100 bucks.http://www.telescope.com/control/product…
These seem to be a knock off of the Mystery binoculars that are of a more normal 8×42 format. See the linked post by a knowledgeable birder. Apparently the real Mystery binos are pretty high quality.
Just a side note for you…after you’ve found your set of binoculars….check out purchasing a book that is exclusive to just binocular objects in the night sky…in addition to any other reference material you may already have of course.
The magnification can’t be 65x. Maybe 6.5x ?
The objective lens aperture of 42 mm isn’t really good enough for astronomy. An aperture of 50 or 70 mm would be better. There are several 7×50 or even 10×70 binoculars from Orion and Celestron that are available for around $100. They’re not super high quality, but they work OK and will show you a lot of nice stuff in the sky.
The issue is night vision and pupil diameter. Most binoculars are designed for daytime use, and have a 3 or 4 mm exit pupil that matches a human eye that is not dark adapted. Night vision binoculars have a larger exit pupil that matches the eye’s pupil when it is dialated. This requires a larger objective lens aperture at a given magnification.

"Telescope binoculars"? No such term. There are "astronomical binoculars", binocular telescopes, and binoviewers which use a prism to split the single light cone from a regular telescope to converge into two eyepieces.
Astronomical binoculars start as small as 10×50 on up. As Eri said, you can see these targets with the naked eye. I have a pair of 25×100 binoculars (a bit of a hassle to mount adequately). With them I can just begin to make out the rings of Saturn and the two most prominent belts of Jupiter. Lower magnification won't show these, though you can still see the Galilean moons of Jupiter and sometimes the phases of Venus with 7x or 10x.
Binocular telescopes, which are two twin telescopes with interchangeable eyepieces are generally of small aperture (less than 110mm unless you have one custom made), only moderate magnifications (usually less than 50x), are relatively expensive in themselves and are massive enough that they will demand a massive expensive mount to use them (forget about hand-holding!).
The above a choices that most appeal to the "richest field" viewing of star clusters, nebulae and other non solar system objects except for hunting down comets, which have a nebulous appearance.
If your main interest is planets you are best off with a regular telescope. Some people like binoviewers with their telescopes. But they are not an essential accessory, and if (like me) you have problems merging images with your eyes then they won't appeal at all.
here's a forum about
The details are slim to none on this one, but we’re all about a good pocket cam rumor. According to the usually-reliable Business Insider Cisco will launch a new set of Flip camcorders around the NAB show which runs from April 12-15, but we don’t have any specs yet. Come on Cisco, now you’ve got us guessing not only about the future of the Internet, but also if your newest Flip will support 1080p. Told you we didn’t know much, but we’ll obviously be keeping an eye out for more.
